Welcome back! We hope you have all had a lovely summer break. Below is an outline of some of the exciting things your children will be learning this half term.
Please remember, reading books are to be in school every day. PE kits should be kept in school.
Homework – Sent home on a Monday and returned the following Monday.
Please continue to read with your child at home, commenting in your child’s reading record.
We begin our term focusing on Legends and looking at the works of J.R.R Tolkien. We will be writing our own legends in a similar style focusing on the thoughts and feelings of characters and punctuating complex sentences.
The rest of the term we will be focusing on persuasion and writing our own persuasive texts to advertise a country from the British Isles.
For the first part of the term we will be learning about place value up to millions, comparing and ordering numbers to 1,000,000 and how to round whole numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000. Negative numbers will be taught, and children will then have to apply their knowledge to solve problems. We will then move on to focusing on addition and subtraction of four-digit numbers using column method. We will finish the term with a focus on multiplication and division. Throughout the term we will work on our mental maths fluency and solve mathematical problems using our reasoning skills.
Our theme this half term is ‘A Kingdom United!’ We will be learning all about the different countries and counties that make up the UK and using our mapping skills to locate them. In history we will learn about the Anglo Saxons and their settlement in the United Kingdom.
This half term we are looking at ‘How and why do Christians read the Bible?’. We will look at how and why the Bible is used and think about holy books from other faiths.
This half term we will be developing our skills in Rugby. Year 5 will have outdoor PE on Monday. With the weather turning cold, we strongly advise warm clothing to suit all conditions. We can’t wait to play some games!
Our computing lessons are focusing on Data Handling and using these skills to interpret and analysis census from current and historical times.
In PSHE we are going to be looking at the idea of “Growth Mindset” and how we can use this powerful way of thinking to improve every aspect of our learning journey. We can’t wait to see just how much we change!
