Reading and Phonics

At St. Matthew's we value reading and place it at the heart of all teaching as a key life skill.  Our reading is taught through systematic, synthetic phonics, using 'Letters' and 'Sounds'.  The children are taught in groups reflecting the phase of the phonics programme they are currently working within.  Children are taught on a daily basis in their phonics groups and are engaged in lively, hands-on phonics activities which develop their reading and spelling skills.

The teaching of reading is supported by a wide range of high quality school and home reading books.  Our reading books include Floppy's phonics, Dandelion readers, Songbirds from Oxford Reading Tree and Collins Big Cat.  Reading books also include non-fiction, poetry and fiction books from well known children's authors such as Julia Donaldson, Anthony Browne and Michael Rosen.

All children receive a home reader and reading record to encourage reading in school and at home, as well as having access to a well stocked library.
